Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder seen in age- dependent dementia and frequency of AD in women is much higher than men. Several hypotheses and risk factors have been suggested to explain the underlying mechanisms of AD. Evidence suggests that a vascular impairment may precede and contribute to the molecular and cellular events of AD. Accumulation of Aβ has been observed in disrupted blood-brain barrier (BBB) during AD. Here in, we review the literature discussing role of BBB in the AD pathology and the differences it might make in the disease progression in men and women.
